Isolated in the northwest corner of France, for centuries an independent duchy, Brittany long ago developed the distinctive culture that still sets it apart from the rest of the country, blending the sturdy independence of seafarers and farmers with an atmosphere of mystery.
Celts from ancient Britain gave Brittany its name and early language, spoken by most Bretons through the early 20th century. Even today Celtic expressions linger in Breton speech. And legend claims this as the land of King Arthur. The landscape is dotted with megaliths set in place by Neolithic people for reasons that still baffle archaeologists. Traditional celebrations feature customs and elaborate costumes passed down from one generation to the next.
