DAILY ITINERARY

Pre-Tour Day: Friday, July 5: (Hotel in Beaune, not included in tour price except for participants continuing from Tour 1)

Welcome apéritif and orientation.

Day 1: Saturday, July 6 (Hotel in Beaune)

Morning: Guided tour of Beaune and its fascinating and strikingly colorful Hôtel-Dieu. From the 15th century until recently it served as a charitable hospital; now it is an impressive repository of art and mementos of customs and medical practices in medieval Burgundy. Afternoon: Free time to explore Beaune and/or possible walk in the vineyards.

Day 2: Sunday, July 7 (Hotel in Beaune)

Morning: Guided walking tour of Dijon, ancient capital of the Duchy of Burgundy, including the Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy and the old town. Optional visit to the Museum of Fine Arts, second only to the Louvre for the excellence of its collections. Afternoon: free time to browse independently. Not to be missed: Moutarde Maille, the factory shop of the company that makes Grey Poupon and other mustards. We will have the opportunity to sample a variety of different types of mustard and admire a fascinating collection of antique mustard pots. En route to Beaune we will visit the historical Clos de Vougeot, built by Cistercian monks in the 12th century. It is surrounded by magnificent vineyards and houses prestigious cellars and collections of winepresses from the Middle Ages.

Day 3: Monday, July 8 (Hotel in Beaune)

Morning: Travel to southern Burgundy, where we will visit the medieval town of Tournus, with guided tour of its 10th-century Saint-Philibert Abbey. After lunch we will walk in and near the old feudal market town of Brancion, perched on a spur overlooking deep ravines, and the tiny town of Chapaize. Late afternoon: visit and guided tour of the château of Cormatin, a jewel dating from the beginning of the 17th century, with a stroll in its gardens and romantic maze.

Day 4: Tuesday, July 9 (Hotel in Beaune)

Morning: Walk in the vineyards near Pommard, Volnay and Meursault and taste some of Burgundy's most prestigious wines. Late Morning: Visit to the beautiful château and village of La Rochepot. Afternoon Options: Free time, short bike ride or visit to medieval village and château of Châteauneuf.

 

Day 5: Wednesday, July 10 (Hotel in Auxerre)

Morning: Visit the tranquil Abbey of Fontenay, oldest surviving Cistercian foundation in France. Its beautiful Romanesque church reflects the sublime spirit of order and simplicity. Optional walks in the nearby area. Free time in Auxerre. Afternoon: Possible visit to Chablis with wine tasting.

Day 6: Thursday, July 11 (Hotel in Auxerre)

Guided walking tour of Auxerre: old houses, cathedral dominating the skyline above the Yonne River, the waterfront, little shops. Free time for browsing. Afternoon: Visit the hilltop basilica of Sainte-Madeleine in Vézelay, a Romanesque masterpiece designated by UNESCO as an international treasure.

Day 7: Friday, July 12

Tour ends after breakast.
